CHICAGO - Mexican director Jesus Mario Lozano's movie "Ventanas al Mar" (Windows to the Sea), a love story set on the beaches of Cozumel and starring Spanish actors Fernando Guillen and Charo Lopez, premiered Sunday at the Chicago Latino Film Festival.
This was the last movie by Guillen, who died in January, in which he and Lopez play an elderly couple who run into and begin to spend time with a pair of newlyweds, played by Mexicans Raul Mendez and Natalia Cordova, at a boutique hotel on the island.
Lozano told Efe Friday that his production "is a film about the sea, but above all about the dark nocturnal sea we all have inside us," a quote from Mexican poet Xavier Villaurrutia.
The film tells "the story of two couples that meet on a beautiful beach, and their meeting creates a mirror-like relationship in which the seniors imagine themselves to be the young couple and vice versa, an experience that exposes their deepest feelings, fears and desires," he said.
Lozano said it was an honor that "Ventanas al Mar," filmed in 2009, was picked for the Chicago Festival, where more than 100 movies from Latin America and Spain will be screened through April 24 at a downtown movie-theater complex.
Lozana's third feature-length film has not premiered commercially, but according to its author, when presented at festivals, it has had a "very warm" reception by moviegoers, "because it's full of metaphors that everyone makes their own."
