“A very Mexican experience” is how someone would describe Guadalajara. Everything about the best distinguishing features of Mexico can be found here. Gastronomy, tequila, charreria, (Mexican rodeo which is also the national sport,) mariachi and history are expressed at their best in this city. You could go to a museum, but in Guadalajara, the museum IS the city. The entire city centre is a designated UNESCO world heritage site.

Guadalajara

If you look at Guadalajara from an aerial perspective, it looks like a cross, which symbolizes the importance of Catholicism to most residents. In this cross, you will find a cathedral, government buildings, and Hospicio Cabanas, the building that houses the famous Jose Clemente Orsosco murals.

The city Center is characterized by that history, but it used to be a small city surrounded by smaller towns. Many of those towns are now amalgamated into the greater city, including Tlaquepaque, where you can arguably discover the best shopping in all of Mexico. It also houses the largest cantina in the world, famous for its margaritas and mariachi. ( called El Parian.)

Day trips in the area include Tequila, which is about a 45 minute drive west of Guadalajara, where you can take wonderful tequila tours with companies such as Jose Cuervo. Forty-five minutes east of the city brings you to Lake Chapala, which currently has around 200,000 Canadian and American ex-pats enjoying life. It’s known to have the best climate in the world with dry, sunny weather. Nestled on  lake Chapala, Ajijic is a town known for a rich artistic community.

CULTOURFAIR

In October 2013, Cultourfair will be hosted in Guadalajara, the first Latin country ever to host this fair. This is an international cultural fair which will showcase Guadalajara on a world stage. It takes place October 2-4, 2013.
