MEXICO CITY – Protests and marches have shutter 2,579 businesses in Mexico City in the first three months of this year — an improvement on last year’s figures, according to Mexico City Chamber of Commerce (Conaco) President Ricardo Navarro on Monday.

In press conference, Navarro said 8,284 people lost their jobs due to protest-related losses. However, total closures were 2.4 percent down from the same period in 2012.

In the last three months, protesters have demonstrated against education reform and rising utility prices. Protests in Mexico City generally shut down main avenues, blocking traffic and forcing businesses to reschedule meetings and events.

In a two-to-three-hour protest, businesses lose about 319 million pesos ($26 million), Navarro said. That number goes up to 574 million for four-to-five-hour protests, and 957 million pesos for seven-to-eight protests.

The demonstrations mostly affect stationary, hardware and auto-parts stores and make the city less competitive on an international level, Navarro added.
