MEXICO CITY.- Flight schedules are being adjusted at Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport starting Thursday to deal with the extremely high volume at the facility and ensure "safe and efficient operations," officials said.
The changes will affect flights from 0600 to 0959 and 1600 to 1959 local time, redistributing them during an eight-hour period.
Air operations exceeded maximum hourly capacity on 52 occasions in 2012, the Mexican Airspace Navigation Service said.
The airport currently has a capacity of 61 operations per hour, with a maximum of 40 arrivals and 21 departures, the service said.
The goal is to serve about 250 million passengers between now and 2015, officials said.
Benito Juarez International Airport handled 32 million passengers in 2012.
