MEXICO CITY — One of Mexico’s most high-profile corruption cases, a former high-ranking defense ministry general charged with drug ties, has collapsed, the latest in a string of big cases that ultimately have fallen apart.
The official, Tomás Ángeles Dauahare, a retired general who was once the No. 2 at the Defense Ministry and talked up as a contender to lead it, walked free late Wednesday, nearly a year after his arrest set off debate over whether he was the victim of a political vendetta or if he represented another sign of links between the military and the drug gangs.
The end of the case came two days after another high-profile arrest — of a federal prosecutor who oversaw organized crime investigations nationwide — was dismissed for a lack of evidence, more than four years after he was charged.
General Dauahare was freed by the new administration’s attorney general, Jesús Murillo Karam, who took office in December and reviewed the case. The general was charged with having passed information to the Beltrán Leyva organization, a top supplier of cocaine to the United States. He was arrested with three other military officials, who remain jailed, though Mr. Karam said their cases were also under review.
