MEXICO CITY - Mexican telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim, who is the world's wealthiest man according to the US magazine Forbes, is to contribute 100 million dollars to a global organization dedicated to eradicating poliomyelitis within six years, his foundation said Thursday.
The initiative also has the technical and financial support of the world’s second wealthiest man, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who publicly thanked Slim for his contribution to the cause while attending a two-day Global Vaccine Summit that ended Thursday in Abu Dhabi.
"It has been more than 20 years since children and parents in Mexico and all of Latin America have worried about polio. It is my hope that this donation will help improve the life of children and parents, no matter where they live, by fostering a polio-free world," Slim said in Mexico City.
"We are excited to join the Gates foundation and other partners in the effort to end this disease once and for all."
The Slim and the Bill and Melinda Gates foundations noted that Slim’s donation is to go to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) and the comprehensive 2013-18 Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan.
