Civil social groups, such as Balance through the Fondo Maria [Maria Fund], are seeking that, like the women in Federal District [Mexico City], women residing in other Mexican states can have access to a legal and secure abortion without being discriminated against.
Some data reveals the extent of the problem: According to a report by the Information Group on Reproductive Choice (GIRE), from April 1st 2007 to July 31st 2012, there were 127 convictions of women for the crime of abortion in 19 states.
Since 2007, when the Federal District Legislative Assembly (ALDF) approved the decriminalization of abortion up to the 12th week of gestation, and until February of this year, the clinics of the Secretary of Health (SS) in the capital have carried out 95,925 safe abortions.
The SS data indicate that 73.2% of women who accessed this service live in the city, while 23.5% came from the State of Mexico, and 3.3% from other states or abroad.
