The new Jumex Collection museum in Mexico City. (Museo Fundacion/Coleccion Jumex)
The Jumex Collection’s new home in Mexico City is due to be completed by July and is scheduled to open to the public in November. It will house the vast contemporary art collection of Eugenio López, the heir to the Jumex fruit juice and foods conglomerate.
The 4,000 sq. m, five-storey building in the upmarket suburb of Polanco is designed by the architect David Chipperfield and will host at least six exhibitions a year. The 2,600-strong Jumex Collection is believed to be the largest contemporary art collection in private hands in Latin America, with special emphasis on Mexican contemporary artists such as Miguel Calderón, Abraham Cruzvillegas and Mario García Torres. Other artists represented include Tacita Dean, Olafur Eliasson, Martin Kippenberger and Bruce Nauman.
The museum is funded by López and his company Grupo Jumex. The Collection Jumex is next to the Museo Soumaya, another private museum, built by the telecommunications magnate Carlos Slim.
