Playboy magazine made history Thursday when it crowned Raquel Pomplun, a Mexican American, the 2013 Playmate of the Year. (Zoominuk)

Raquel Pomplun from Chula Vista, California, was announced as Playboy's new Playmate of the Year last week.

In keeping with tradition, the 25-year-old, who was raised in Tijuana, Mexico, and studied biochemistry at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, was awarded $100,000 in prize money as well as a one-year lease on a 2014 Jaguar F-TYPE.

The model, who is also classically trained as a ballerina, proudly made history as the first-ever Mexican-American woman to be given the honor.

'I can't begin to describe how excited I am to receive this honor and be given the opportunity to represent Playboy as its first Mexican-American Playmate of the Year,' she announced in a statement.

'Playboy has taught me a side of myself I didn't know before,' she added. 'It's been a year of wonderful surprises!'
