MEXICO CITY – The fifth edition of the Friendly Cultures Fair will promote tourism for all its participating cultures, Mexico City official Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano said last week.
Fair organizers expect 86 countries and 1.5 million visitors to attend the fair, which, according to Cárdenas Solórzano, will be one of the most important cultural events of the year.
The event began in 2009 as an attempt to boost tourism in Mexico after the 2009 H1N1 flu virus outbreak.
The fair, which starts on May 25, will take place along the city’s central Reforma Avenue. Embassies from countries around the world will set up booths offering their culture’s food, clothing, music, books and other products. The fair will also include an artistic forum at the Puerta de los Leones, the entrance of Chapultepec Park, which will feature special cultural events hosted by different countries.
Mexico City will have its own booth and throughout the fair the “Through Your Eyes” photography contest will be held. Images from the contest will be included in a visual scrapbook for the fair.
The fair, under the motto “The World in Your City,” will give residents and tourists a chance to get know cultures from around the world, Culture Secretary Lucia García said.
Mexico City Secretary of Tourism Miguel Torruco said the fair will cost 10.5 million pesos ($870,000), and will bring in about 300 million pesos to the local economy.
