In the war against the drug cartels, Mexican villagers have paid a terrible price. In the Costa Grande region of Guerrero state, whole communities have been driven from their homes.

Leopoldo Soberanis, a local fruit businessman, has 24-hour protection from federal police officers because of threats to his life. He has spoken out against the violence of the cartels and the military. He has also been accused of collaboration with the cartels - a charge he denies.

Accompanied by his police bodyguards, Soberanis took the BBC's reporter Linda Pressly, and photographer Richard Fenton-Smith, on a tour of the deserted villages of the Sierra de Tecpan de Galeana.
