Dengue is a potentially fatal disease spread by infected female mosquitoes of the Aedes aegypti species. Bed nets are of little use because this species of mosquito also bites during the day. With no vaccine and more than 2.5 billion people worldwide at risk of infection, new methods to prevent the spread of this debilitating disease are urgently needed. (Wellcome Trust)
JALISCO - Special measures will be taken during the 2013 rainy season to prevent the spread of dengue, Jalisco’s Secretariat of Health (SSJ) said in a statement this week.
State Dengue Program Coordinator Leandro Hernández Barrios said efforts would focus on reducing areas where mosquitos, the disease’s carriers, breed, adding that all containers that can collecting stagnant water must be covered, washed, turned over or thrown out.
“The work of the SSJ, on the preventive side, is to inform the population of basic measures: washing, covering, turning over and eliminating. With these actions we can reduce the amount of breeding areas.” Hernández Barrios also said that the SSJ would treat wells, water tanks and other water storage containers with larvicide, and fumigate the streets daily.
But, she said, the very best method of controlling the disease is reducing breeding areas, something residents can do for themselves.
