MEXICO CITY – President Enrique Peña Nieto presented his strategy to confront climate change early this week and announced measures to promote sustainability.

His strategy includes reducing the vulnerability to climactic changes for Mexicans who live in at-risk regions, increasing the capacity of the country’s ecosystems to adapt to the effects of change, and migrating to clean energy sources. Reducing energy consumption, adapting models for sustainable cities, promoting better agriculture and forestry practices, and reducing pollution are also seen as important strategic goals.

Peña Nieto said that new regulations to increase the fuel performance of new cars and reduce carbon emissions had been approved and would soon take effect. He added that policies must be adopted across the board to reduce CO2 emissions to 30 percent above the baseline by 2020 and to ensure that at least 35 percent of electricity is generated from clean sources by 2024. An Environmental Quality Commission will also be established in the country’s major metropolitan areas to reduce air pollution.

Peña Nieto said that his administration was committed to promoting environmental policies with a long-term vision. “The earth is our shared home and our collective heritage,” Peña Nieto said. “We only have one planet to live in and the planet only has us to care for it, so it’s essential for us to adopt a paradigm of inclusive green growth.”
