MEXICO CITY – China and Mexico will change from being competitors to colleagues, marking a new beginning for bilateral trade between the two nations, President Enrique Peña Nieto said Wednesday.

In a speech to Chinese businessmen currently visiting Mexico with President Xi Jinping, Peña Nieto said that these were new times for Mexico and that his country was a trustworthy and attractive place to invest.

China and Mexico’s diplomatic relationship stretches back 41 years, though there has been some criticism in Mexico in recent years that their commercial relationship is too one-sided. China is Mexico’s biggest trade partner after the United States. According to the Bank of Mexico, Mexico imported $57 billion of Chinese goods in 2012, while its exports to China were worth only $5.7 billion.

Addressing the businessmen, Peña Nieto said that achieving a greater trade balance between the two nations will be a key part of trade relations in the coming years.

Peña Nieto praised President Xi’s goodwill, saying that he hoped their joint goals would come to fruition as the Asia-Pacific region represents an economic opportunity for the rest of the world, adding that China was a huge player in that region.

“Mexico and China are entering a new era in bilateral relations through which there will be close communication between our governments,” Peña Nieto said.
