MEXICO CITY - Twenty-two people were arrested for attacking police during a demonstration yesterday marking the 42nd anniversary of a student massacre in Mexico City, officials said.

The protesters were taken to the holding facility at the Federal District Attorney's Office, the Federal District Public Safety Secretariat said.

The suspects were arrested for "disturbing the peace, (causing) injuries, disobeying authorities, making threats, carrying objects for assault and robbery," Federal District Attorney Rodolfo Rios said.

... National Autonomous University of Mexico, or UNAM, and National Polytechnic Institute, or IPN, students took to the streets of Mexico City on June 10, 1971, to demand that President Luis Echeverria, who governed Mexico from 1970 to 1976, allow political freedom and democratize higher education.

The protest started peacefully but turned violent when "Los Halcones," a paramilitary group, opened fire on demonstrators, killing at least 22 people and wounding around 50 others.
