Many visitors to Mérida treat it simply as the gateway to the wealth of Mayan ruins scattered across the Mexican state of Yucatán. But they’re missing a trick.
Mérida, the largest city of the Yucatán Peninsula, is an intriguing place to visit in its own right. It has developed a distinct cultural identity thanks to a unique combination of historical influences.
Founded by marauding Spaniards in the 16th century, its limestone stucco and paved streets have a distinct European feel.
Its Mayan heritage is alive in the guttural dialects, the pork-heavy cuisine laden with spices and beans, and the traditional guay- abera worn proudly by the men.
The city is one of the biggest of the Americas and is bursting with beautifully restored 19th-century colonial architecture. It is also considered a safe city to visit and offers a more unusual Mexican experience.
