MEXICO CITY - A Mexican judge on Monday ordered the arrest of former Tabasco state Gov. Andres Granier on corruption charges, in a case that is seen as a test of President Enrique Peña Nieto's determination to root out alleged corruption after returning the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, to power after 12 years in opposition.
The federal Attorney General's Office, or PGR, said on Monday that a judge in Tabasco issued two warrants for Mr. Granier's arrest as a result of charges by the PGR of using money of illegal origin and tax fraud. The PGR said the Tabasco judge will determine where 65-year-old Mr. Granier, who is undergoing heart tests at a Mexico City hospital, must face the charges.
It wasn't immediately clear whether the former governor would be transferred to Tabasco, some 420 miles southeast of Mexico City, given his health situation. Attempts to reach Mr. Granier's lawyer, Eduardo Luengo Creel, were unsuccessful.
Mr. Granier, of the PRI, has denied any wrongdoing when he governed Tabasco from 2007 to 2012, saying the embezzlement accusations against him were part of a smear campaign by the new administration, headed by Arturo Nuñez of the leftist Democratic Revolution Party, or PRD.
