A grandmother from Mexico will be celebrating this weekend having at-last graduated primary school at the ripe-old age of 100. Born in June 1913, Manuela Hernandez left her education just a year into primary school in order to help around the family home during extremely difficult times.

Her grandchildren suggested that she think about finishing what she started just last year when Manuela has already turned 99 and she was immediately onboard with the idea. And it turns out the decision would pay off – Manuela was presented with her diploma this week and the celebrations kicked off in style.

“I liked school very much, but I could not continue studying,” said Manuela while speaking to Uno TV.

“By the next year I could already wash and iron.”

But Manuela has no intention of slowing down now – she’s already confirmed that she will carry on studying at secondary school level and cannot wait to get started.

Manuela joins a minority groups in her home state of Oaxaca where less than 50% of the population graduated from primary school.
