18 years ago a slight lapse in concentration crushed Pascale's dreams of surfing. With the help of a family friend and a roll of duct tape; she can now call herself a surfer. (Mark Tipple)
Pascale Honore wasn’t born a paraplegic. She lost the use of her legs in a car accident almost 20 years ago. And while that impediment made for an extensive rehabilitation process, it didn’t stop Honore from living the kind of active life that seems to come so naturally to her.
But the one thing she wanted to do most, but couldn’t, was surf - until recently.
Honore's sons are avid surfers, and she always wanted to join them in the water. A family friend, Tyron Swan, came up with the ultimate lo-fi way to allow Honore to live her dream of riding big waves - he duct taped her to his body and surfed with her on his back.
... They've coined their activity "duct tape surfing" and hopes that it encourages others who not only want to surf but want to tackle any aspiration that seems out of the realm of possibility.
Named the “Legless Summer,” the pair's summer tour is raising money online right now to fund a trip to ride even bigger waves and inspire others to see past their own obstacles.
