AP Update: Dalila has strengthened into a hurricane as it moves away from Mexico's Pacific coast and is expected to weaken again. The storm Tuesday had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph). The storm is centred about 190 miles (306 kilometres) west-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, and is inching toward the west-northwest. The government of Mexico has issued no storm warnings or watches for the coast.
MEXICO CITY - Tropical Storm Dalila turned away from Mexico's Pacific coast on Monday, but it could still grow into a hurricane and produce large ocean swells and heavy rain, forecasters said.
Dalila was moving northwest off the states of Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco, all of which could be hit by heavy storm conditions, according to the National Meteorological Service of Mexico (SMN).
At 1500 GMT, the storm packed winds of 95 kilometers (60 miles) per hour, moving at 15 kilometers per hour some 205 kilometers southwest of the port of Manzanillo, Colima state.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Dalila could become a hurricane by Tuesday.
Dalila, which had been previously forecast to head toward landfall in Mexico's Pacific coast, is the fourth tropical storm of the 2013 hurricane season on the west coast.
Two of those storms became hurricanes, including one that made landfall in May, killing three people and leaving 4,000 people without homes in the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas.
