Violence against candidates in campaigns in 14 states of the country is the highest recorded in recent years. Four days before citizens go to the polls to elect one governor, municipal councils and more than half of the mayors of the country, at least four candidates have been killed in just over two weeks.

Also assassinated were the son of a campaign manager in a municipality in Sinaloa and a local PRD leader in Oaxaca. Three other candidates have been attacked.

In Veracruz, the first candidate for alderman in Boca del Rio, Carlos Alberto Valenzuela, was abducted on Tuesday and released five hours later....

The national leader of the National Action Party (PAN), Gustavo Madero, said on Wednesday morning in an interview with MVS radio: "We are living in terror. There have been calls, there has been torture, there has been bloodshed and bastardly messages. There have been sisters of candidates who were raped in order to show them what is going to happen (...) All they want is for people to be afraid, to panic, so that people don't go to vote."
