MEXICO CITY – The Mexican government repeated its commitment this week to defend the rights of Mexicans abroad, no matter their immigration status, said Undersecretary of Foreign Relations for North America, Sergio M. Alcocer Martínez de Castro, upon concluding his working visit to the U.S. cities of Washington D.C. and New York.

During his two-day visit, Martínez de Castro met with federal officials and academics to discuss bilateral cooperation on matters such as renewable energy and higher education. He also met with community leaders in the Mexican-American community at the Mexican Consulate in New York on Tuesday to discuss the U.S. immigration reform bill.

The U.S. government is currently debating an immigration reform bill which would provide the 11 million undocumented immigrants in that country with a path to citizenship. It would also double the number of Border Patrol agents and use unmanned drones to patrol the U.S.- Mexico border.

The proposed immigration reform was approved by the U.S. Senate, though it is expected to face a tough battle to pass the House of Representatives, dominated by hardline Republicans. Mexico’s Foreign Secretary José Antonio Meade has expressed support for the path to citizenship, which he says recognizes the contributions made by Mexican immigrants to the U.S. economy, but says he has reservations about the proposed militarization of the border.

“Fences do not bring people together,” he said.
