MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s deputies have agreed to postpone debate on a controversial educational law that provoked fierce protests from one of the country’s biggest teachers unions, after senior deputies agreed it needs revising.
The lawmakers, who had largely avoided negotiating with the CNTE, have been trying to pass a series of secondary laws to reform Mexico’s public education system. The lawmakers were able to pass two laws late on Tuesday evening, leaving the most divisive law — that which mandates teacher evaluation — pending.
Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) Parliamentary Coordinator Manlio Fabio Beltrones said that the deputies decided to postpone the law in favor of prudence, tolerance and above all, dialogue.
