Celebrities Who Were Once Victims Now Shed Light on Domestic Violence
Speak out: campaign against domestic violence. (GD3JUSTICE)
“If he hits you once, I promise you he will hit you again, so please walk away, please.” Those are the wise words of La Toya Jackson, who suffered through domestic abuse for years at the hands of her late ex-husband and manager Jack Gordon.
She lived in such fear of him that when he died she sent her body guard to confirm it was him, as he had stalked her and lied about his death in the past.
Jenni Rivera was also a victim of domestic violence. She shared the grim details of several instances of abuse and rape in her autobiography “Unbreakable.”
They are not the only celebrities to be abused by their partners. Recently, we have seen pictures of Chef Nigella Lawson being choked by her husband and there are countless others who have reported domestic violence.
These are just some celebrities who have suffered domestic abuse:
Christina Aguilera (her father), Evelyn Lozada (Chad Ochocinco), Charlize Theron (her father), Madonna (Sean Penn), Rihanna (Chris Brown), Pamela Anderson (Tommy Lee), Whitney Houston (Bobby Brown), Nicole Brown (O.J.Simpson), Jaslene Gonzalez, Tina Turner (Ike Turner), Robin Givens (Mike Tyson), April Lee Hernandez, Mariah Carey and Ana Ortiz by a partner she dated in her 20s.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but abuse is something that’s rampant every single day. One in four women becomes a victim of domestic violence according to the Centers for Disease Control with 20 percent of Latinas enduring violence at the hand of their partner, as reported by the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
These celebs who suffer through domestic violence and overcome abuse are examples of this statistic. Through their celebrity status, they’re shedding light on the issue.
