The Action For Food Program Needs Your Help

Jennifer Brinckmann - Amigos de La Cruz
February 24, 2013

If you have been following the Amigos, you know that the Action For Food Program engages 3 different women 3 times a week in performing community action such as sweeping the pavement and streets. Each woman receives one package of food worth approximately 125 pesos in exchange for two hours of street cleaning.

The program was initially started by PEACE which was not able to continue its funding so was absorbed by Amigos de La Cruz and Inside La Cruz.

We have been proud to support the local community in this manner and feel that this program is important to meeting the mission of the Amigos de La Cruz’ environmental as well as charitable goals.

Unfortunately the reality of the program is that in 2012 the cost of the food was 51,405 pesos ($4,050 US). The money raised at our monthly dinners and earmarked for the program was 16,840 pesos ($1,327 US). The difference of 34,565 pesos ($2,743 US) was paid out of general funds.

We now find ourselves facing a situation in which we will no longer be able to continue our recycling and garbage programs, help for the schools (including summer school) as well as our street cleaning program, which has given partial employment to 5 la Cruz residents for the past 6 years, if we continue funding the Action For Food Program.

It is important to note that the Amigos is covering the cost of the food only. Additional funds raised by Inside La Cruz at events such as The Taste of La Cruz were used to pay the salary of the program supervisor who was initially hired by PEACE.

We’re hoping that some of our members will step up and volunteer to commit to the program by agreeing to sponsor a worker at an approximate cost of $500 US per year or $42 per month. If nine members can do this, we hope that the program can remain active.

Additionally we need a supervisor for the program. Obviously this person will need to be local and will have the responsibility of working in collaboration with Inside La Cruz to oversee the supervision of the women, as well as the assuming the weekly responsibility to purchase and distribute the food packages.

We have heard from several of you that you would like to see the program continue. So would we! If you are interested and willing to commit, please send an email to amigosdelacruz@gmail.com.
