Both Tunnels on Luis Donaldo Colosio Now Open to Vehicles in Puerto Vallarta NotiVallarta

After careful monitoring to verify feasibility of opening the route, the Deputy Director of Municipal Transit, Jesús José Rodríguez Campoy, as well as the head of Civil Protection and Firemen, Sergio Ramirez López, both two lane passage tunnels on Luis Donaldo Colosio, a major thoroughfare in Puerto Vallarta, has finally opened to accommodate about 60 thousand vehicles that circulate daily in this important highway.

At 3:30 in the afternoon on Saturday, March 23, the opening of the two tunnels took place that are part of the main road arteries of the municipality which connects the North and South of the city without driving through the busy downtown area of Puerto Vallarta.

Within the maintenance works that were carried out to make way for vehicular traffic, Campoy said that they are seeking to have better lighting to provide greater safety for drivers and similarly stressed the importance of cleaning inside and around the tunnels, and the adding of vialetas (raised buttons or lane markers) for a better guide to drivers.

Rodriguez Campoy said that this is an appropriate date for the opening, with the Semana Santa and Semana Pasque increase in vehicle traffic stating "this is a proper date at the start of the holiday period for our locals and visitors in providing improvements like this one to our destination."

In addition to Puerto Vallarta, with the use of both tunnels, the municipalities of Cabo Corrientes and Tomatlán will also benefit with the more fluid flow of vehicle circulation, which according to estimates of the Manager of Municipal Transit, could amount to 60,000 vehicles daily.

The official said that he is satisfied that we can finally offer this improvement to our citizens "because it was much needed to have a second tunnel to solve the severe traffic jams in that area."

It is worth mentioning that the tunnel has an area of 490 meters, and also that the lighting currently is provisional since there has been a request submitted by the Secretariat of Communications and Transport to provide a company completing those improvements by the Federal Government.

During the inspection process, it was also noted that there should be the creation of a small tunnel to connect both ways in case of any eventuality or emergency services needed.

Finally Jesús José Rodríguez Campoy recommended drivers make use of the road with caution and that there is a speed limit of 50 km/h adding "this improvement represents a breakthrough for the ease of traveling through the city of Puerto Vallarta and not as an opportunity to exceed the speed limit."
