OEPV fundraiser: You too can make a difference in the world! (Orquesta Escuela de Puerto Valla)

We have just launched our first online fundraiser for the Orquestra Escuela de Puerto Vallarta A.C. (OEPV).

We are hoping to raise $1,200 USD. With the funds, we will be able to continue to support the development of orchestra and band students here in Puerto Vallarta. The school has an enormous impact on their lives and on the community.

The OEPV is a community action program that helps develop musicians with the intention of expanding their outlook and forming a better community within the city. It's the only music program in PV with a rigorous and extensive music development which assures our students a chance at competing with graduates of the best music conservatories and schools. We work with an academic calendar schedule comprised of three levels of ensembles: Band and Orchestra I (initial level), Band and Orchestra II (intermediate level) and Chamber Orchestra (advanced) along with working alongside move developed programs as well.

A music schools primary focus is based on the fundamental development of the musicians individual understanding and skill and incorporating them into the larger sound. The musical development of the youth is focused on building that community and not just the individuals. The OEPV also aims to expose and develop the community consciousness and awareness of culture through music for the betterment of the city.

The development of the work at the school is natural, progressive and builds community as well allowing the more advanced students a chance to help their classmates as well. The students are split in sections and musical family by instrument and are tutored by masters specializing in their specific instrument area. That way they learn directly and are better able to fit into the collective cohesion of a productive orchestra. Learning to play together develops their discipline, communication and collaboration skills between all the members. A system like this gradually helps to eliminate racial, class, educational or social prejudices by allowing kids from all walks of life to work side by side.

The OEPV project looks to, among other things, develop better citizens within all walks of life. It's a project that aims to develop better leaders committed and consistent in their respect of their city. Along those lines the project aims to give back to the community, making PV a more attractive place for everyone. This is accomplished through festivals, concerts, benefits and media attention which all point towards continual public awareness.

The work breaks into three principal groups: the beginners, intermediate and the advanced. The last two work together in an orchestra which in a few years will develop into a community symphonic orchestra. Each group, based on their musical ability, develops methods and works on music appropriate for their level.

The project works with kids from 8-22 years with and without previous musical experience. In the case of someone who has no musical background they simply start with the beginner class and work their way up like everyone else. The students of the school work by section and once a week a full rehearsal with everyone is present. Each student receives personal feedback and instruction from a maestro in their instrument to improve their technique and development. Weekly classes are available on music theory for more advanced students which helps them better understand and play their own music. The school follows a quarterly academic calendar and at the end of each cycle they evaluate each student and reform their progress based on their individual development.

Daniel Oliveros is the Conductor and Director of the Puerto Vallarta Chamber Orchestra and many of the students have progressed to be able to play with the Chamber Orchestra. We continue to grow because of their participation. This organization is a wonderful addition to Puerto Vallarta. Daniel can be reached by telephone at (322) 224-5671 or cellular at (322) 105-8344.
