Golf Tournament Fundraiser for Lou Gehrig's Disease Francisco Salazar - El Tigre Golf & Country Club

The Flamingo Golf Club and Unidos al Galope will join together on May 26, 2012, in hosting a fundraising golf tournament to raise awareness and support for those whose lives are affected by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), known as Esclerosis Lateral Amiotrofica (ELA) in Mexico, is also called Lou Gehrig's Disease, and is a fatal, incurable degenerative and progressive disease of still unknown origin of neuromuscular type.

The disease originates when the nervous system cells, called motoneuronas, gradually decrease functioning and die, causing progressive muscular paralysis and a deadly prognosis.

In its advanced stages, patients suffer paralysis that accompanies an increase of exaggerated muscle reflexes, causing the loss of movement of the limbs, as well as the muscles involved in breathing and the heart, causing cardio-respiratory arrest.

Physicist Stephen Hawking

Physicist Stephen Hawking, perhaps the most famous patient of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, made his way to a Conference in Jerusalem in 2006. While there, he spread the knowledge of the existence of this desease among the attendees, sponsors and the media with the hope of obtaining support for people suffering from ALS.

Stephen Hawking is the former Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and author of A Brief History of Time which was an international bestseller. Now Director of Research at the Institute for Theoretical Cosmology at Cambridge, his other books for the general reader include A Briefer History of Time, the essay collection Black Holes and Baby Universe and The Universe in a Nutshell.

In 1963, Hawking contracted motor neurone disease and was given two years to live. Yet he went on to Cambridge to become a brilliant researcher and Professorial Fellow at Gonville and Caius College.

Since 1979 he has held the post of Lucasian Professor at Cambridge, the chair held by Isaac Newton in 1663. Professor Hawking has over a dozen honorary degrees and was awarded the CBE in 1982.

He is a fellow of the Royal Society and a Member of the US National Academy of Science. Stephen Hawking is regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Einstein.

To support people with this condition, under the auspices of Unidos al Galope A.C., they are joining together with the Flamingo Golf Club in Nayarit, Mexico, to host a Golf Tournament Fundraiser and are hoping you can help.

The tournament will be held at Flamingos Golf Club on May 26, 2012, beginning with registration at 7:30 am, Military honors at 8:45 am and followed by a shotgun start at 9:00 am.

The donation entry fee is 1,500 pesos per person or 5,400 pesos per foursome.

At 2:00 pm in the Flamingos Clubhouse, the fun for a good cause continues with food, drink, auction and surprises, all to honor Cap. Alejandra Lemus. The donation for this portion of the event is 250 pesos.

A brief medical presentation will be given at 4:00 pm.
