Octopus Garden in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle

With the recent celebration of National Octopus Day, it is an auspicious time to give you update on Octopus Garden in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle and put out a call out for volunteers.

Most of you know Wayland and Aruna who arrived in La Cruz 25 years ago on a sailboat that they built themselves in England. They are one of the original foreign settlers in La Cruz. Along with their development of a magical spot, the Octopus Garden, they have been very active in support of community activities. They were one of the original founders of APERCH, the predecessor of Amigos de La Cruz. They also started the Summer program, started English classes for the locals and sponsored many fund raising events in El Jardin del Pulpo.

A year ago Wayland fell from a third story roof. This accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. Thanks to a great mental attitude and a determined will to recover Wayland is making a slow but steady recovery. He has been assisted in his recovery by a dedicated team of friends and neighbors who have volunteered two to four hours a week to work with him providing him with the exercise and physiotherapy that is needed to progress with his recovery.

Unfortunately, some of the team has moved out of town and some others are up North for the Summer. We need of a couple more volunteers (couples can work together).

No physical therapy background or knowledge is required, but certainly is a plus if you have it. The only requirement is that you come with an open heart and willingness to return some of the support that Wayland and Aruna have given to this community over the years. I promise you that participating in this activity may be one of the most rewarding activities you could do in La Cruz.

If the "hands-on" therapy is not your cup of tea you can still help by sponsoring the hiring of a local to help with exercise sessions.

If you have any questions please contact Duncan at (322) 126-4562 or Aruna at (322) 193-8503.
