In Puerto Vallarta surprises are a constant factor in everyday life. A day planned for relaxing may end up with a big party or vice versa. And that’s exactly what happened to me last Wednesday night.

It started normally with a quiet morning, enjoying the sea at Mango's Beach Club, lying on a beach bed and enjoying a great drink. Then I checked out the official Puerto Vallarta Twitter account (@PVVisit) to see what would be going on that night and that's when my day started to change.

I learned that every Wednesday night the main street in Puerto Vallarta, Medina Asencio Boulevard, is closed from the whale sculpture at Plaza Neptune in Marina Vallarta to the arches on the Malecón for cycling. I was excited about the idea but there was a problem: I have no bike! But Twitter saved me when I read about Bicita Vallarta, a bicycle rental service.

I got in touch with them and the nice woman working there had some bad news for me: the bikes had all been rented out a week in advance! I explained that I was on vacation and that if she happened to have any cancellation, to please call me.

I spent the afternoon with my girlfriend strolling along the Malecon and when we were looking for a restaurant, I got the call I'd been hoping for: there were two bikes available!

We hurried to get changed for the ride and arrived at the Vallarta Marina were our bikes were waiting... along with more than 300 cyclists! It was an awesome way to see the city, alongside tourists and Vallarta residents, and an experience we'll never forget.

We cycled past the Vallarta Marina, the Salado Estuary,//pvangels.com/charities/162/fideicomiso-estero-el-salado the Pitillal River, the Hotel Zone, into the downtown center and then to the Malecon. We went past the sculptures up to the arches on the Malecón where we rested for 15 minutes to cool off with a delicious tuba, a great drink available from vendors, and then started on the return trip.

At the end of our ride, the rain starting coming down heavily which was really refreshing after all of the exercise.

The ride was an unforgettable way to see beautiful Puerto Vallarta from a different perspective, and if given the opportunity to do it, don’t think twice! I would highly recommend it. You can find Bicita Vallarta on Facebook and they will gladly give you information about this great activity.

Just show up on Wednesday at 8:40 pm at the entrance to Marina Vallarta for the "Night Bike Ride" and discover another side of Vallarta. Don´t forget you helmet and gloves!
