The Historic Port of San Blas will celebrate National Conservation Week from October 22-29, 2016, a national event celebrated every year by the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas (Conanp, by its acronym in Spanish) in order to raise awareness in the community and educate them on the environment. This year’s slogan is “Respeta la naturaleza, valora la vida” (“Respect Nature, Treasure Your Life”).

“I think the Conanp does great work with little resources here on a local level and now that organizations such as the Peace Corps are getting involved they’re able to perform miracles,” said Doris Vázquez, President of the San Blas Hotel and Motel Association. “The road is long but the important thing is there are people involved who are doing their job such as the team put together by Jorge Castrejón, and we as an association and a community support the initiatives that improve our destinations. The idea is to join our efforts and multiply them.”

The Isla Isabel National Park and Peace Corps Mexico are collaborating with the organization of several events in San Blas, among them a beach cleanup, handicrafts with the kids, a turtle release event, workshops and chats, a documentary and film exhibit, a photography exhibition, bicycle tours, bird watching excursions and an Eco-Fair.

The majority of the activities will take place in the Casa de la Cultura located on Canalizo street and the corner of Sinaloa in the San Blas Centro neighborhood.

This year the Eco-Fair on the Plaza Principal will take place on Saturday, October 30th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm with several organizations and civil associations pitching in to help. For example, this is the first time Entre Amigos is participating, a group that has spearheaded San Pancho’s cultural revolution.
