Fundraiser to Raise the Roof for La Cruz School

September 12, 2012

On Friday, September 14, at 7:00 pm, a benefit will be held at Philo's to raise funds for the bathroom construction project at our local primary school.

Local mothers will cook a traditional Mexican feast, and local children will perform Folklorico dance and Charro roping. And, of course, there will be plenty of music. Some background on what this event is all about seems in order…

Back in May of this year, La Cruz Delegado (think mayor) Angel Alberto Garcia de Haro invited Amigos de la Cruz Vice President Connie Hollander and local resident Mike Nichols to attend a meeting of the local Delegation to begin a new phase of cooperation, collaboration and increased awareness in La Cruz. At this meeting, Connie and Mike heard about pending plans for new bathroom facilities to replace and upgrade the existing ones (currently in very bad condition) at the Primary School (La Escuela Primaria Emiliano Zapata) on Calle Coral.

Concerned parents were understandably worried that the lack of proper bathroom facilities could quickly lead to health issues. The one building that was being used by all the kids and teachers was not sufficient, it also lacked sinks.

The second bathroom building was falling down and unusable and needed to be demolished and rebuilt. The estimated cost for reconstruction materials was 220,000 pesos ($15,000 US Dollars or about $25 per square foot).

Labor would have to be donated. The problem, as with most projects of this scope, was raising the money and resources.

As word quickly spread, the project began with several locals donating their time, design, labor and money including Mike Nichols, architect John Moss and friend Marielena, Duncan Randall, Efren Lopez, Aruna Piroshki, Regidor Dr. Hector Piementa and Principal Thomas Gonzales as well as many others who worked for free and others who anonymously donated money.

As the project has progressed through its various phases, different teams have assumed leadership as needed.

The project is now in "Phase Four" which involves putting on the new roof of the structure, and approximately 26,000 pesos in materials for this phase of the project can hopefully be procured with the proceeds from the benefit at Philo’s.

Please help support this project by coming to the benefit this Friday. You can get tickets at Philo’s, from Randy Wilson, Karen Cope & Jim Lennon or from any of the teachers at La Escuela Primaria Emiliano Zapata.

Philo's Bar & Restaurant is located at 15 Delfin in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Nayarit. Telephone is (329) 295-5068.
