The twelfth Festival Madonnari in Puerto Vallarta will take place on November 10, 11 and 12, 2017 in the main square. This event is organized by the Committee of Sister Cities Puerto Vallarta - Santa Barbara.
Madonnari art originated in Italy during the 16th century. Itinerant artists were brought to the cities and commissioned to paint the great cathedrals. Upon completion of the assignments, and the need to find some alternate mode of survival, they began to recreate the images of the construction on the pavement.
The term madonnari comes from the fact that these images originally were mostly madonnas.
From November 10th to the 12th at Plaza de Armas, you won't want to miss the Madonnari Chalk Festival Puerto Vallarta 2017, where amazing artists will reunite to participate with ephemeral paintings on pavement, using chalk and pastels.
There will be four different categories: Child (under 8 years), Junior (8-11 years), Youth (12-18 years) and Adults.
The first place in the Adult Category will win an all expense paid trip to Santa Barbara, California and the opportunity to participate in the Madonnari Festival in Santa Barbara representing Puerto Vallarta. Cash prizes will also be awarded.
The theme is open and will be judged by guest artists from Santa Barbara on drawing, composition, use of color and depth of the works.
Registration will be from 10:00 am on November 10 where participants will be assigned their workspace and issued materials to begin their artistry.
You are welcome to watch the creations come to life on November 10, 11 and 12 until 6:00 pm. The closure and Awards Ceremony will be held at 7:00 pm on November 12 outside City Hall.
