Victor M Toledo Manzur, Mexico's Minister of Environment, comments on Earth Day 2020 and COVID-19:

"It has been 50 years since a few citizens started this global movement for the Earth, which has grown like a snowball.

Today, we celebrate this 50th Anniversary within a very special situation: humanity has been shattered by a small virus, so small, that we cannot even see it, it is invisible.

This very special situation, that affects more than seven billion people, is also an opportunity to wake up!

Now more and more citizens are conscious of what is happening.

COVID-19 is a public health crisis which is directly linked to a health crisis of the Planet.

The pandemic of the virus is mainly a biological and ecological situation that arises from the precarious conditions of human, animal and plant life of the Planet and the breach of environmental balance on all scales, of which the worst is climate change.

From SEMARNAT, the Ministry of the Environment of Mexico, we are taking measures and implementing actions to solve these problems.

We proclaim the central thesis that the health of the planet and human health are inseparable.

This is the main lesson we will learn from this health crisis that humanity suffers and this message is the best homage to those who started this global movement of consciousness and ethics 50 years ago!"
