Hurricane Nora Disaster at SPCA-PV and RISE Shelter Report and More News SPCA-PV/RISE/PEACEAnimals | |
go to original August 30, 2021 |
The news is unfortunately true regarding SPCA-PV. The river took half of our sanctuary on Saturday night. We managed to get everyone out to safety, except for 3 kittens.
Thank you so much to the staff and some incredible volunteers for evacuating the shelter to a nearby school in the middle of the night. Sunday morning we were lucky to get 9 dogs on a planned flight to Vancouver, thank you to our flight angels Leah and Christina! And then we started moving all the pets to some foster homes and most of them are at a space in Aralias where the Cuale Spay/Neuter clinic is held.
We spent Sunday getting moved and settled there while we were also trying to salvage anything possible that the river hadn´t taken out of the ruined sanctuary building. Sadly there isn´t too much left.. and the part of the building still standing is not stable.
Thank you to everyone who came to bring donations, food, towels etc. and helped us move and get set up with the dogs in our temporary shelter.
Today we will read your messages and emails and get organized and let you know what else we need. PV foster homes for one, mostly for medium and larger dogs. Email us at spcapv@gmail.com.
For much needed donations at this time, please visit SPCA-PV.
A quick update from SPCA-PV this morning
Hello friends!!
Muchas gracias, thank you so much for your donations and help!
What we still need:
• Cat litter /Arena de gatos
• Cat litter pits / boxes for bath cats
• Cat Food / Cat Food
• And food for our employees who will be at the Aralias location daily.
Also, 2 of our staff members who lived at the sanctuary lost all their belongings in the flood. They need clothes, women´s small and medium size.
What we do NOT need more of right now due to lack of storage:
• No Plates and Dishes / Water Bags
• No Dog Croquettes / Dog Food
• No Cleaning Supplies / cleaning stuff.
We will need more of these items in the future but for now we have enough and can´t store more.

From RISE Childrens Shelter
Many you you have reached out to us to make sure all is ok at RISE after Hurricane Nora came through. For those of you here in PV and suffering from the damages - we hold you in our prayers.
We at RISE are all ok and safe.
RISE did not receive any damage from the hurricane. Our Internet is out, and although school was going to start today, it has been postponed due to electrical outages and damaged roads. We aren't sure if it will begin this week or next.
We at RISE are very fortunate.
Although the winds and rains were not severe in the city, the outer bands of the hurricane dumped 18 inches of rain in a 3 hour period up in the mountains. This inundated the Rio Cuale (Cuale River) and caused severe damage to Puerto Vallarta. The building that housed Bonita kitchen and apartments collapsed into the river and a 13 year old boy (son of the owners of Babel Bar) was killed. Incanto theater and first floor bar has been flooded. The bridge crossing the Rio Cuale at Insurgentes has been destroyed, patios were ripped off houses along the river and retaining walls washed away. These are just a few of the damages nearby.
Today is calm and the city will begin rebuilding. Please keep PV in you your prayers as many are without homes, food, electricity and water.
Thank you for thinking of us - be well and stay safe.
Report from PEACEAnmals
As everyone is probably aware already, Puerto Vallarta was affected by Hurricane Nora on the afternoon of Saturday, August 28th. With the eye passing just over the north end of the bay and Punta de Mita, many people were affected by flooding and winds. Rivers and arroyos burst their banks and washed out buildings and winds knocked over trees and left much debris to be cleaned up over the subsequent days and weeks. Several lives were lost. As reported by many news outlets, this storm refuted the myth that we are immune from the threat of being hit directly by these fierce acts of nature. We were able to conclude the clinic in Altavela this week before the storm's major affects began to appear on Saturday.
Update from a friend of PVAngels
Just had a long phone conversation with a neighbor and he took a long walk today to assess all the damage and what a total disaster from the river. The whole River Walk was washed away including trees and the vendor stands and the whole patio side of the River Café and the Cultural Center and the big Indian Market was flooded with all the souvenir stuff floating around and there is no beach left with waves going over the Malecon and everything around there flooded. Nora had turned inland and dumped 18 inches of water into the river in 3 hours after the river was already overflowing from all the big rains we have been having. He said the ocean was totally brown. There are still 6 people missing. They found the body of the 13 year old son of the owners of the Babel Café on the River Walk. The other lady that is missing was washed away from her car and the other 5 are fishermen.
He said what was really amazing was the attitude of the people and how resilient they were with cleaning up the best they could with all the loss and still laughing and appreciating life and all the volunteers that showed up to help and bring food.
