Mary Ann Blythe and Kim Hopkins want your bras. Big ones, small ones, ones with underwire, prosthetic bras, any kind that you have tucked away.

They're collecting throughout the month of October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, for women in Mexico. The bras will be given to the Cancer De Mama Clinic, in Mexico, where the bras will be refurbished and used by women who have undergone the treatment and trauma of breast cancer.

"There's no support in Mexico. There's no support groups, there's nothing. They have the attitude there that if you've had a breast removed you're dirty and you're shunned," Blythe said. "I can't imagine trying to get over something like breast cancer and having a breast removed without the support groups."

After they are donated, the bras are mended, the under wire is removed, they are cleaned, and then they make the day of a woman in Mexico.

Quoting from the website for the clinic, Blythe says, "It's not just the bra you're giving these people you're giving them their dignity back again that they can walk in the community again without people staring at them and treating them the way they do. You're giving them their self-esteem back. That's so much more than a bra," she said.

Blythe also said they will accept donations of used breast prosthetics and homemade prosthetics. Instructions on how to knit the homemade prosthesis can be found at the cancer mama clinic website.

Head First is located on 10th Street in Hanover.

For every person donating, they will receive $10 off the services Blythe performs through her Natural Path, a service specializing in raindrop therapy, natural health, support garments and healthy living.

Other drop off locations include Cowans Country Store in Listowel and Stylsetter in Wingham.

If you are in or coming to Puerto Vallarta, bras or donations can be dropped by Cancer de Mama in La Penita, Nayarit, or contact Maruca Dinsmore by telephone at (327) 274-0715 or by email at cancerdemamaclinic@yahoo.ca.
