What Is an Endangered Species? (WWF Wild Classroom)

National Endangered Species Day was a day to celebrate and raise awareness for endangered species around the world.

Unfortunately, many of these animals are at risk of extinction due to habitat loss, poaching, and other human activities. Here in Puerto Vallarta, we are lucky to have a rich diversity of wildlife, including many endangered species. In this blog post, we will take a closer look at some of the amazing animals that call our city home.

We have a protected natural area for the care and protection of this endangered and native species. It is called “Estero El Salado” or El Salado estuary.

This is the home of 99 species of birds, 46 of plants, 10 of mammals and 29 of amphibians/reptiles and it was declared an ecological protected zone on July 27th, 2000.

River crocodiles, iguanas, raccoons, crabs, and opossums, are among the species that are originally from this área. If we go even further in the mountain and jungle we can even find Jaguars, ocelots, white-tailed deers, armadillos, and coatis.

So, on National Endangered Species Day, let us all take a moment to appreciate the amazing wildlife that we have here in Puerto Vallarta and Bahia de Banderas.
