PEACEAnimals Scrambles to Save the Cats on Isla Cuale

Many locals know that a colony of homeless cats inhabits La Isla Cuale in Old Town Vallarta. Residents of the area and all over Vallarta come and put food out for the cats daily. Tourists come to see them. There is even a tour company that provides tours.

The cats have lived here for years. These are not feral cats but rather beautiful cats that were once pets or unwanted kittens brought to the Isla knowing they would be fed. It is a dumping ground tolerated by the local authorities.

Every now and then someone in government decides that there are too many and they are destroyed. It came to my attention that the cats may be in jeopardy again and that the killing could start in 3 weeks. Trying to find a true answer is almost impossible.

These cats have been spayed/neutered and have clipped ears which is how the groups doing spay/neuter identify them. Next time there is a spay/neuter clinic volunteers can choose non-clipped eared ones to take to the clinic. Right now the estimate is 50 to 60 cats on the Isla.

The problem is by the time anyone knows for sure the cats will be killed it is too late. They sweep onto the Isla at night and poison the cats. It is a horrible, inhumane death for these lovely creatures. There has been public outcry after the massacres in the past, but we need to act on behalf of the cats before it happens.

All cat rescue shelters in PV are full.

Wet Noses Rescue in the Punta Mita area is willing to help. They do amazing work and have 90 cats already.

Together Wet Noses and PEACEAnimals will save as many of these cats as possible.

We ask other rescue groups to join in the mission!
