It distresses me to hear about abuse to both cats and dogs, which is still rampant here in Vallarta. This story is about a husband who took action. We need so much more education to change this horrible pain to animals caused by humans.

Whenever I visit my dermatologist here in Vallarta we talk about animals. She has such a compassionate heart for people and animals, but both she and her husband are very busy. She couldn’t wait to share this story and now I am happy to pass it on to all of you.

They had just rescued two kittens that her dog found by barking at a dumpster. They looked inside and found the tiny kittens. The dog that found the kittens was also a fairly new rescue after their dog of many years passed this spring.

She was just getting used to having three new pets when her husband brought her a cappuccino in the afternoon to her office. She was immediately suspicious because he already brought her one that morning. "What have you done," she asked? "Just hear me out," he said.

She winked and said he proceeded to tell her about his day. He was walking and saw a woman kicking a little dog so hard the dog yelped repeatedly. Her husband went over to the woman and spoke to her in Spanish, "Is this dog attacking you?" She said. "no." And then he asked why she was kicking the dog. The woman replied that it was a terrible little dog. He said, "it looks like a fine dog to me. Why are you kicking the dog?"

Her answer shocked him when she said she had taken the dog up to the jungle and left it there and it had found its way back to the her, so she had to punish the dog for coming back. Her husband was angry but said he kept an even tone. He offered to buy the little dog and asked how much. The woman didn’t say anything. He said, "I won’t report you to the police for animal abuse if you sell me the dog." Well, she paused and said, "maybe I should just give you the dog."

My dermatologist’s husband then took the little dog in his arms and off they went. Now they have two new dogs and two kittens.

As she finished with me, she smiled and shrugged her shoulders and said, "He is a good and kind man." I nodded and felt so good when I left. We can all be more proactive when we witness the abuse of animals. That is one lucky dog and so many others are left to die alone, hungry and afraid. I admire her husband!
