In a significant move to safeguard the rights of minors, the Nayarit State Congress has approved reforms to the Penal Code concerning sexual crimes in their latest Ordinary Public Session held on March 24th.
Deputy Héctor Santana announced the addition of a second paragraph to Article 137 of the Criminal Code, which outlines the crimes of corruption of minors, prostitution, pandering, pornography, sexual abuse, rape, equated rape, harassment or sexual harassment, violation of sexual intimacy, and trafficking of minors. According to the revised penal code, young people who have been victims of any of these crimes can report conduct that puts their integrity at risk, even if time has elapsed.
The proposed amendments allow for the prosecution of crimes to be carried out, ensuring the integrity and healthy development of minors who are victims of sexual crimes. The goal is to eradicate impunity and bring perpetrators to justice, even if a considerable amount of time has passed since the commission of the crime.
Deputy Héctor Santana emphasized that the approval of the modifications is a crucial step towards protecting children and adolescents, and ensuring that any conduct that affects them is sanctioned by means of a complaint, thereby guaranteeing them the right to file a complaint.
The new reforms to the Penal Code are a significant milestone in the fight against sexual crimes and ending impunity for perpetrators of these heinous crimes. The Nayarit State Congress hopes that the revised penal code will help create a safer environment for minors and promote healthy development, free from the fear of sexual crimes.
