Fire Equipment Donated to Mexico (FOX 5 San Diego)
To help firemen in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, a Type-6 Fire truck and other essential fire apparatus are on their way south.
Through Operation Southern Blaze, a collaboration between participating American Legion Posts, neighborhood fire departments, and nonprofit veteran assistance organization Convergence, the equipment will be given away. The operation's goal is to assist Mexican firemen.
According to Mark Ford with the organization, certain tiny fire departments in Mexico frequently lack the funds or resources needed to effectively fight fires, and that equipment that is surplus for our fire departments is necessary for their fire agencies.
Fire agencies from Washington donated a truck to be sent to a fire station in Puerto Vallarta as a gesture of support, and other organizations provided gear and equipment. All of that was loaded onto the truck last week for the journey to Mexico.
Gerardo Alonzo Castillon Andrade, the chief of the Puerto Vallarta Fire Department, is extremely appreciative of the gift.
He said, "The equipment you're giving us is crucial." We don't have much of it, but what we do have is essential to protect ourselves from fires.
