Earthquakes are part of the daily life of planet Earth, from small tremors barely detected by geological technology to large earthquakes such as those in Indonesia, Japan or Chile.

According to a study conducted by a group of scientists from the University of Washington, there is a rift called Pythias Oasis in the Pacific Ocean which, despite being located deep in the ocean, can cause mega earthquakes of minimum magnitude 9.0, and which can be felt with great intensity in Canada, the United States and Mexico.

This rift has low salinity and high temperature that flows from the ocean floor about one kilometer deep. The peculiarity of the matter is that thanks to this fluid the movement of tectonic plates is smoothed out, however, if it runs out, or the level drops, it can cause a large earthquake.

The cities most affected by this mega-earthquake will be located on the Pacific coast such as Vancouver in Canada, Anchorage, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego in the United States, and in Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlan. Mexico.

Because earthquakes cannot be predicted, authorities urge the population to be prepared to face one, or multiple earthquakes, as calmly as possible, carrying a first aid kit with them and following the earthquake authorities’ recommendations.

In the case of Mexico, one of the American countries with the largest telluric movements, there are evacuation drills with which they prepare the population in case of an earthquake.

The most powerful earthquakes that humanity has been able to record have occurred on the Pacific Coast near the famous ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’, a place where different tectonic plates move continuously, causing earthquakes with the magnitude of a moment. Japan recorded 9.1 in 2011, Indonesia 9.3 in 2004, Alaska 8.3 in 1952 (which generated a 520-meter wave that triggered a mega-tsunami), and Chile's 9.6 in 1960 - the most powerful earthquake ever recorded by humanity.
