Is there a way to give back that benefits everyone? Citing the success of collective giving practices from around the world, philanthropic advisor Rebecca Darwent asks donors to let communities lead decision-making, ushering in a new era of philanthropy that’s rooted in interconnected humanity.
There are many ways to fund real change in our communities. Here are a few ideas:
-
Donate to local organizations that are working on the issues you care about. This could be a food bank, a homeless shelter, a community center, or any other organization that is making a difference in your community.
-
Start your own fundraising campaign. You could raise money for a specific project, such as building a new playground or providing scholarships to local students. Or, you could raise money for a general fund that can be used to support a variety of community needs.
-
Volunteer your time and skills. There are many ways to volunteer in your community, even if you don't have a lot of free time. You could tutor children, help out at a soup kitchen, or simply lend a helping hand to your neighbors.
-
Educate yourself about the issues facing your community. The more you know, the better equipped you will be to make a difference. Read articles, attend community meetings, and talk to people who are working on the issues.
-
Get involved in the political process. Vote in elections, contact your elected officials, and let them know what you care about. You can also get involved in advocacy groups that are working to make changes at the local, state, or national level.
No matter how you choose to get involved, your donation, time, or skills can make a difference in your community. By working together, we can create real change that benefits everyone.
Here are some additional tips for funding real change in your community:
-
Do your research. Before you donate to an organization, make sure you know what they do and how your money will be used.
-
Support organizations that are led by and accountable to the community. This will help ensure that your money is being used to address the needs of the people who are most affected by the issues.
-
Be flexible. Sometimes, the best way to fund real change is to be open to new ideas and approaches.
-
Don't give up. It takes time and effort to make real change, but it is possible. Keep working at it, and you will eventually see results.
