The Mayor of Bahía de Banderas, Mirtha Villalvazo, has carried out the installation and inauguration of the Municipal Group for the Prevention of Teenage Pregnancy (GUMPEA), for which the Municipal Institute for Women (IMMUJER) is responsible.

With the objective of promoting local strategies oriented to the attention and development of this sector, the GUMPEA is made up of various local and state agencies, and is the first to be established in all of Nayarit.

Among the members of this group are the Fund for the Welfare and Advancement of Women (FOBAM), the Municipal DIF, the Municipal Human Rights Commission, the Sports and Public Safety Departments, the National System for the Protection of Children and Adolescents (SIPINNA), the Institute for Women in Nayarit (INMUNAY) and the Special Prosecutor for Women's Affairs, among others such as the Municipal Youth Institute and the Municipal Institute of Art and Culture.

The GUMPEA aims to place the issue of teenage pregnancy on the municipal agenda, and thus generate priority actions for the municipality of Bahía de Banderas.

This group was created after a request made by FOBAM to IMMUJER, with the intention of working to prevent and eradicate pregnancy in girls from 10 to 14 years old and to reduce it in adolescents from 15 to 19 years old, since Bahía de Banderas is the third municipality in Nayarit with the highest number of teenage pregnancies.

Gabriela Valderrama, head of IMMUJER, pointed out that the creation of GUMPEA is indispensable due to the increase of teenage pregnancies in the municipality, so the work will be focused on reducing the number of cases through the strategies contributed by the member institutions.

For her part, the municipal president, Mirtha Villalvazo, pointed out that the integrity of girls and adolescents is an issue that occupies her administration, so strategies will be generated to address and combat these cases, because many times pregnancy in very young women has become normalized. "It is a very complicated issue that worries us a lot, but we will generate strategies to avoid early pregnancy," said the mayor.

It should be noted that among the nations that make up the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Mexico ranks first in teenage pregnancies, and only 90 municipalities in the country have installed a GUMPEA.
