The SPCA Puerto Vallarta Still Standing Following Hurricane Lidia SPCA de PV

This month we were excited to share the news of the gradual re-opening of the shelter, the near completion of the new facilities, and the dozens of animals we had rescued or had adopted out in the past year. Unfortunately, Hurricane Lidia had other plans.

On Tuesday evening October 10th, Lidia made landfall as a category 4 hurricane just south Puerto Vallarta.

Just like Nora two years earlier, the rainfall from Lidia caused River Pitillal to overflow its banks and destroy much in its path. Half of our original shelter was destroyed two years ago and the rest of the building was taken by the river on the 10th.

All of the dogs on property were safely moved to higher ground and protected by the new shelter structure and staff housing. No animals were lost. Without sufficient space in the nearly complete new shelter, we have been working hard to find foster homes for the dogs while we can complete the new shelter.

On Tuesday, there were 33 dogs living at the shelter. One week later, we found temporary homes for eight. Those remaining are being kept in the usable portions of the new shelter, rooms in the staff housing, in Casita Ruby, our new vet clinic, and in crates on property.

Our friends and supporters in Vallarta have stepped up their support for the animals. Much of our supplies and all of the dog food were in the building that was lost. Volunteers have provided daily donations to help care for the animals and staff.

Volunteers are coming to the shelter nearly everyday to walk the dogs so they continue to get the exercise and socialization they need in such a stressful environment.

Our immediate focus is two-fold.

Find more foster homes for the dogs remaining at the shelter and finish the nearly complete 10 new kennels and staff housing. Luckily, with the exception of a few of our newly re-installed solar panels, there was no damage to the new buildings.

Our two members staff have been recovering the fencing left at the river bed, and improvising some doors for the new kennels as our proper doors are not yet done.

Our Spay and Neuter Clinics Continues

We will also continue with our spay and neuter clinics to slow the growth of unwanted and uncared for animals.

18 animals were treated in our September clinic, bringing the total to almost 200 in the last year.

The SPCA Puerto Vallarta, was founded in Jalisco Mexico, in 2007 by a long term resident originally from California, Janice Chatterton. We opened our sanctuary in January of 2012 on the outskirts of Puerto Vallarta. We are a no-kill shelter and can house up to 130 animals at once (before Hurricane Nora). We rescue and find permanent homes for over 200 animals each year.
