Looks like we are going ahead with the plan to do a summer school at Bucerias Bilingual Community Center from the 10th of July until the 19th, from 9:30 am until 1:30 pm. There will be no weekend classes.

We will have no more than 25-30 kids, all aged from approximately 7-11. I am hoping that the older kids will take on a role of leadership for the younger ones too, to try and instill other qualities that perhaps they do not have in their family situation. Some kids are "only ones" and they may find this a nice way to integrate. Just an idea.

We would love to know if you would like to volunteer or know of others that can help.

One class each Friday will be swimming...either teaching to swim or improving those who can already, maybe with tuition in life-saving if any of our volunteers can instruct.  I can actually do that if needs be!

We have a Mexican male puppet master who will come and do a theater/drama with the kids, a pool donated locally for the swim class, a face painter/artist/dancer (female Mexican); a North American Sculptor who will come and show the kids how to make clay sculptures (but he speaks no Spanish so one of us needs to help him out!), various other folks who will come and do workshops but we need the volunteer stalwarts to be there throughout, even if in shifts.

We have reduced the hours and won't be including meals as such, but will provide healthy snax, fruit, drinks.

We have transport to the pool we will be using. I would like 6 volunteers if possible please. Bilingual-ish is best but not mandatory.

We will be offering some English classes too, as well as math and some environmental projects like teaching them why not to throw litter in creating a cleaner environment, so all these are things that perhaps the volunteers can "bring to the party?"

We have a new initiative called Earth Box which is another thing we want to show to the kids in the summer program.  They can start to grow their own produce!

Some of the mums have also said they will come and help to keep their kids under control if we need them but I think the whole idea of this is to give kids and parents a breather and for the kids to really get a great experience.

Mexicans seem to be very resilient, creative and hardworking so their entrepreneurial side may start to shine thru if we give them a means to make an income as they get older so these are all part of our mission at the BBCC as facilitators of our community.

By starting at 9:30 in the morning, it leaves time for half an hour of settling down time and meeting each other every day, explaining the day's activities, and if there were heavy rain it can be cleaned up by that time. We have inside and outside classrooms so no problem there.

We also have a big garden area with gravel and tile.

We hope you can help us make some money this summer so we won't have too much of a struggle in paying our basic staff wages until November. We appreciate any and all help and suggestions.

Thank you so much,
Alison, Executive Director, BBCC
