Fact of the month

In 2014, 30,000 cases of extreme violence against women were reported in Mexico. Because of the severe lack of shelters in the country only 2,000 women were able to seek refuge in shelters.

Last Month

A fund raiser was held on February 6th at 8:00 pm at the Luna Lounge in Bucerias. All proceeds went to the Banderas Bay Women's Shelter. Thank you Sandi Barkwell and Luna Lounge for your support.

We now have available a small hotel in Bucerias which can be used as a short term stay shelter (up to 4 days). This is a great opportunity for us and a real blessing for abused women and children in this area. Thanks Bruce!!

Last month the board members of Banderas Bay Women's Shelter made a trip to Guadalajara and met with Social Services Jalisco, The Women's Institute of Jalisco, the Jalisco Justice Center for Women and Secretary of Health Jalisco. We are very optimistic about working with a couple of these agencies to serve women and children in the state of Jalisco.

We also meet with some social workers and psychologists from the Secretary of Health in Nayarit. They will be providing us with there valuable services.

Currently

March 8th is the International Woman's day 2015. The Woman's institute is sponsoring events and educational seminars March 3-8.

We completed and submitted first federal grant application and we are now working on the second grant application. More applications to come. These grants can provide assistance in professional salaries, security, furniture, vehicles and small construction projects.

As amazing as it may seem, we are still waiting for the first family. It is a real struggle to communicate with the government and find people who really want to help battered women. No doubt they will arrive soon. The Secretary of Health in Guadalajara informed us in our meeting with them that just last week they lost two women because they had no shelter where they could send them.

Upcoming Events

March 8th: The Women’s Institute Puerto Vallarta will be hosting a 10k run and a dinner to benefit the shelter.

March 14th: American Legion Post 14 Puerto Vallarta is hosting the 3rd annual Chili Cook-Off held at the El Rio BBQ Restaurant from 1:00 - 5:00 pm.
